is popularly a city of bankers and diplomats, people who prefer to
conduct their business behind closed doors. Yet any visitor to the
city cannot help being struck by the sheer range of possibilities
outdoors, including walks along Lake Geneva, trips to the old
villages and pleasant countryside immediately outside the city or to
the nearby Jura Mountains (with their excellent cross-country skiing),
and of course the Alps. The
Cointrin Airport, with its excellent rail and road
connections, is
the gateway to a good deal of Europe's prime skiing, not just in
Switzerland, but also France. The French resorts of Chamonix,
Megève, Avoriaz and, farther afield, Val d'Isère and the Trois
Vallées area, are all within two to three hours of Geneva by car. A
journey to the Swiss resorts is made even easier by the Fly-Rail
system operated by Swissair and the Swiss railways. Bags are taken
from the airport directly to Swiss train stations or resorts, then
back to the airport on departure. |
